Transcript:

My Name is Armando Ello, I am photographer, filmmaker en the initiator of Hoezoindo.nl.

Which stands for “Hoe do you mean Indo?”

Have you ever questioned about yourself where you actually came from?

Where are your parents from and maybe even more important, where did you grand parents came from?

For me: I knew very little where I came from. My parents were divorced when I was 5  so I grew op with my Mother who originally comes from West-Timor, Indonesia.

I assumed I was Indonesian, which for a part I am, but my Father is the Indo side in my family. My father is what they call a Dutch-Indo, which is derived drom Indo-European, hence the shorter term for it: an Indo..

When I think about it, that makes me an Indo too!

This distinction made all the difference on how I live my life today. I was ashamed of not knowing where I came and where my family came from, and when and why they migrated to the Netherlands before I was born.

People assumed I eat a lot of rice at home, but actually was the opposite. I grew up with ‘ Hollandse pot’ mashed potatoes, vegetables and pork meat.

The only time we ate dutch-Indo snacks is when we had visitation of dutch people, where the children didn’t enjoied much of those delicious Indo snacks. ..like pastei, lemper, loempia, kelapamuda shizzle, which I hardly new the name of because I alway’s had to taste it before I knew the name of it.

Back in 2004, When I was studying photography I choose my final project to be about Portraits about Indo’s like me.. with the intention to learn from them what this Indo thing was all about. I discovered that nobody knew. It was a realisation that I was not the only one who knew nothing about my heritage but this unknown area was spread out on a whole generation.

I was shocked!

I believe that a little bit of awareness of your Indo roots an what the definition of indo means to myself and in my family helps me to a greater understanding and gives me a much broader perspective on our history and where we actually came from.

Either way I believe it is your right to know your family history.

I finished my book in 2016 by crowdfunding it a year before that. This year the book is sold out and I’m busy with the 2nd print.

I took almost 300 pictures of Indo people with their mixed feelings about their Indo-Identity right here in my studio in Gouda. and this is the end result.

This december 2017I began me research about Indo’s living abroad and overseas, because I think that in itself is worth a story to tell and I would like to document interested indo’s who would like to participate in my project.

The working title for now is called: The Hoezoindo Project. And you can fill out this form underneath If you are living outside of the Netherlands.

I am very curious to see where Indo’s live nowadays and what your story is.

This project will be starting in 2018 here in the Netherlands. And if you apply in this form below I will start planning to travel to the city where you live during the year.

So I invite you to fill out this form or share it to your Indo connection in your network.

I will keep you updated about this project in 2018 and as an example I give you one of the first Portraits just to give you a visual of what I have in mind..

The Hoezoindo project is mainly focused on the third generation mixed Indo between 18 and 35 years old.Tag someone if you think he or she fits this project 🙂

So lets meet in 2018, eat some Indo-food, Gado-Gado, spekkoek or tjendol, and document together the Indo-diaspora all over the world.

Thanks you for watching, don’t forget to like and subscribe!

Peace!
